Bratl in da Rein: the classic for larger groups

By Bräustübl Kaltenhausen

Bratl in da Rein: knuspriger Schweinsbraten mit Kartoffeln in der Rein, dazu Knödel und Sauerkraut

When the “Rein”, the roasting pan, lands on the table at the Bräustübl, it is more than a meal: it is a celebration. The “Bratl in da Rein” is our classic for convivial groups: oven-fresh pork roast with blood and liver sausage, dumplings and sauerkraut, served straight from the pan everyone shares.

What exactly is a “Rein”?

In Bavarian and Austrian German, the Rein, sometimes called a Reindl, is a roasting pan: a large, deep dish in which the roast cooks in the oven. With Bratl in da Rein, this dish goes straight onto the table. Nobody gets a ready-made plate; everyone helps themselves. That is exactly the charm: food is shared, seconds are taken and stories are told, just like at a big family dinner.

A piece of Austrian tavern culture

Roast pork is one of the great classics of Austrian cuisine, and a shared roast in the pan is a tradition for celebrations and holidays in many taverns. It comes with hearty sides: dumplings that soak up the gravy and sauerkraut, whose acidity provides a fresh contrast to the rich meat. Blood and liver sausage turn the pan into a true feast.

For a proper get-together

The Bratl is available for groups of 5 or more and only with advance reservation; a proper roast needs its time in the oven, after all. With your reservation we know how many guests are coming and can plan the roast so that it arrives at your table on time and fresh from the oven.

How your Bratl evening works

  1. Request: tell us the date and number of guests, most easily via our contact form.
  2. Arrive: your parlour is ready and the first beer is tapped.
  3. Serve: the pan comes fresh from the oven to the middle of the table and everyone helps themselves.
  4. Enjoy: seconds are expressly welcome.

Keg tapping to start

To open the celebration in style, prove your talent at the keg tapping: the 20-litre wooden keg comes with glasses and an apron. A full-bodied beer such as Kaiser Ruperti with its caramel notes or a slender Märzen goes well with the roast. Read more about our beers in the article Kaiser beer on tap.
